Existen en Colombia dos eufemismos (es decir palabras cuya presentación es un poco decorosa y más delicada de la idea que uno desea lanzar, ya que su expresión directa podría sonar demasiado duro) que sin ser entendidas en el contexto adecuado pueden chocar. Se trata de negro/a (negrito/a) y gordo/a (gordito/a), usadas con bastante frecuencia entre las parejas para dirigirse con cariño y afecto.
Normalmente, negro, significaría una persona de tez morena o de pelo oscuro y gordo, una persona obesa, bien alimentada o a la que le gusta comer.
En Colombia, estas dos expresiones, utilizadas en forma de vocativo o como apodo, no tienen nada que ver son su significado literal. Simplemente, es una forma de llamar a un ser querido, en vez de usar su nombre. Es muy común, escuchar en las conversaciones que las mujeres hablando a o de su marido, mencionan: “Mi gordo” o “Mi negro” y al revés, los hombres dirigiéndose a sus esposas: “Negrita” o “Gordita”, suavizando el apodo con el uso del diminutivo.
Incluso, entre amigas, este eufemismo aparece a veces, cuando después de un largo tiempo de no verse, se encuentran en la calle y una de ellas grita: “¡¡¡Gordita!!! ¿Dónde has estado?” Esta expresión es muy colombiana y hasta se hace simpática, a pesar de que por primera vez, para alguien que la desconoce, podría sonar como un insulto… De todas formas, si alguna amiga, más gorda que yo, me empieza a llamar así, sinceramente, el apodo me hace reír. La cosa se vuelve aún más chistosa, si empezando la frase, me dice “Negrita…”

Incluso sin diminutivo, todo depende del tono de voz. Por ejemplo yo tengo una amiga que siempre le dice a su esposo “el gordo” / “mi gordo” el tono de voz de afecto hace que no se requiera diminutivo. De la misma manera en otra parte de Latinoamérica que no es habla hispana (Brasil) se usa frecuentemente “nego” (equivalente a negro en español. Por ejemplo, se puede decir “Você está bom, nego?”
